Types of Non-Destructive Testing

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

The tensile-strength test is within itself fruitless; in the process of collecting material, the sample is obliterated. Though this is excusable when a good store of the sample exists, nondestructive methods are better for materials that are costly or arduous to make up or that have been shaped into finished or semifinished samples.

Liquids

One common nondestructive process, used to detect surface breaks and imperfections in metals, employs a penetrating fluid, which is either brightly dyed or fluorescent. After being pasted on the surface of the sample material and set to impress into any tiny cracks, the fluid is removed, leaving totally perceptible breaks and weaknesses. An analogous technique, used for nonmetals, uses an electrically charged fluid pasted on the sample surface. After the extra liquid is removed, a dry powder of opposite charge is sprayed onto the nonmetal and attracted to the cracks. Neither of these methods, however, can identify internal weaknesses.

Radiation

Internal, like external flaws, can be detected with X-ray or gamma-ray technologies in which the radiation scans the metal and impinges on a suitable photographic film. In some cases, it may be possible to focus the X rays on a single part within the material, bringing up a three-dimensional view of the flaw identity along with its position.

Sound

Ultrasonic inspection of areas requires transmission of sound waves above human hearing range through the material. In the reflection method, a sound wave is targeted from one end of the piece, reflected by the opposite area, and signalled back to a receiver located at the beginning point. When isolating a weakness or imperfection in the sample, the sound wave is reflected and its movement altered. The actual delay is then a mark of the location of the crack; a map of the sample can then be formed to isolate the location and geometry of the marks. Using the through-transmission technique, the transmitter and receiver need to be placed at opposite sides of the subject; interruptions in the signal of the sound waves are used to isolate and measure cracks. Sometimes a water medium is used through the use of which transmitter, sample, and receiver are immersed.

Magnetism

As the magnetic aspects of a material are largely shown by its overall structure, magnetic processes are sometimes used to characterize the situation and general dimensions of flaws and breaks. In magnetic testing, a tool is utilized that holds a sizeable coil of wire through which flows a steady alternating current (primary coil). Located inside this initial coil is a smaller coil (the secondary coil), to which is secured an electrical measuring device. The steady current in the primary coil generates electrical current to move within the secondary coil by the process of induction. If an iron rod is slotted within the secondary coil, acute changes in the second current can implicate imperfections in the bar. This technique only isolates changes in areas within the length of a sample and will not locate longer or continued marks that easily. A parallel method, utilizing eddy currents induced in a primary coil, also should be utilized to find errors and weaknesses. A steady current is induced in the test material. Marks that exist within the signal of the current change resistance of the test material; this alteration can be measured by the correct processes.

Infrared

Infrared processes have sometimes been employed to locate material continuity in complex construction objects. In testing the value of adhesive conjoinments with the sandwich core and facing sheets with a usual sandwich construct object like plywood, for example, heat is applied to the face of the sandwich skin sample. Where bond lines are continuous, those core parts show a heat depression on the surface piece, and the general temperatures of the face will fall evenly on the bond lines. In the case where the bond line is not enough, gone, or erroneous, however, local temperature does not fall. Infrared photography of the front will then show the location and shape of the marked adhesive. Another such method employs thermal coatings to change appearance when reaching a devised degree.

Conclusively, nondestructive test processes also are being sought to show a whole determination of the mechanical aspects of a test object. Ultrasonics and thermal techniques are most valuable in this instance.
